S.M.A.R.T.® Program

The S.M.A.R.T.® Program (Students learning about stroke, Making healthy lifestyle choices, Aware of risk factors, Teaching others that stroke is 80% preventable) was designed to teach children, grades K-12 about the warning signs of stroke as well as prevention methods. The program was developed in 2014 by leading USC Neurologist Amytis Towfighi and now serves dozens of schools in the Southern California region under its own Foundation and is a leading force in K-12 stroke education.

The program has been praised by both teachers and students alike, and operates over the course of three days as seen below:

  • Session 1: Students will learn about stroke biology, symptoms, and prevention methods by limiting their Core 4 risk factors.
  • Session 2: Students will watch a video about young stroke survivors and participate in activities designed to help them understand the perspective of a stroke survivor.
  • Session 3: Students will hear testimony from a stroke survivor or medical professional and participate in more activities.

Throughout these sessions the Out S.M.A.R.T.® Stroke Team holds raffles for student participation. Homework is also assigned with the purpose of having the students go home to educate their parents about what they learned in class. The end goal of the program is to spike stroke awareness levels in locals next to participating schools and offset a multitude of future strokes and other health ailments from occurring by targeting the youth for primary stroke education.
