Since being implemented in 2014, the S.M.A.R.T.® Program has made a significant impact in schools across Los Angeles and Orange Counties. We measure our success by surveying all students before and after they have been through the program. In addition to this, our homework assignments require the students to go home and educate their parents about what they learned in class. We survey the parents before and after their students teach them about stroke and usually we find a significant change in understanding of basic stroke symptoms and risk factors.

2016 was the first full year of the program’s operation, and we managed to reach 1,854 students and 903 parents in 5 different partnering schools. From what we have learned in our data, after S.M.A.R.T.® instruction 98-95% of the students and parents grasped basic stroke symptoms and risk factors when the program was finished. This spike of stroke awareness levels in locals we have visited could lead to a drop in stroke death and disability in the coming years, since a focal point of our course is training the students to identify strokes and act on them. Below, you can see an sample of our Downey High School before and after data and its findings:

As we can see, before S.M.A.R.T.® 28% of the students were sure sudden confusion or trouble speaking were symptoms of stroke. Post S.M.A.R.T.®, a unanimous 98% of the students were sure this was a symptom.

In the lower graph, 59% of students were convinced sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg were symptoms of stroke before S.M.A.R.T.®. After S.M.A.R.T.®, a unanimous 95% understood this to be a symptom of stroke.

In addition to this, we have received accounts from students stating they immediately went on to identify and act on stroke symptoms after our instruction. You may see their accounts in the document below.

Soon, we will be providing quarterly impact reports on this page from the various schools that we visit.
